The village was established in Moorish times by Berber settlers who discovered a striking similarity with the mountains of their homeland and those of the Sierra de Grazalema.

The existing pueblo blanco overlooked by a dramatic outcrop, is the most popular base for the visitors who flock here for climbing and hiking.
